Detailed profile of this breed: origin, year of creation, recognised varieties and official approvals.
Summary of the breed
The Danube Frizzle Goose is a medium-to-large, calm dual-purpose breed selected for its distinctive frizzle plumage and robust outdoor suitability. Typical weight ranges are 5.0–6.5 kg for ganders and 4.5–5.5 kg for hens. Laying performance is moderate, with about 25–40 white eggs laid per year. Meat yield per bird is solid, and carcass quality features a fuller breast and good overall flesh distribution when fed appropriately. Temperament is gentle and flock-friendly, making it well suited for family farms and free-range systems. They require dry, well-ventilated housing with access to water for feather conditioning. The frizzle plumage provides a striking, ornamental appearance that can be advantageous for smallholders and exhibitions.
Detailed origin
Originates from the Danube basin in Central Europe (notably regions around Hungary and Romania) where local geese were selectively bred and crossbred with frizzle-mutation lines during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The aim was to combine hardiness and cold tolerance with an eye-catching curly feathering. The breed spread through breeder networks into other parts of Europe later in the 20th century and was adopted by enthusiasts and smallholders who value ornamental plumage alongside practical meat and egg production.
Detailed description
Physical description: plumage is predominantly white with curly or frizzle feathering across the body, including the neck and wings; head is smooth, beak is orange-yellow, and legs are pinkish-gray. Size is robust with a relatively long neck and a broad, rounded body shape. Flight is generally limited in adults due to body mass. Longevity is typically in the range of 15–25 years with good care. Reproduction: reach maturity at about 6–8 months; eggs are white; average yearly egg production is 25–40 eggs per hen. Broodiness is moderate to high in some lines, with good maternal instinct in broody hens under suitable conditions. Health and husbandry: thrives in dry, well-protected housing with room for regular exercise; requires access to water for feather maintenance; disease resistance is similar to other medium-sized farm geese and benefits from standard vaccination and parasite control programs.
