Breed summary

The New Zealand is a medium-to-large commercial rabbit breed, valued for meat production, laboratory use and as a show/pet rabbit. Qualitatively it has a broad, well-muscled commercial body, upright ears and a short, dense flyback coat. Quantitatively adults typically weigh between 4.0 and 5.5 kg (8.8–12.1 lb), reach sexual maturity at about 4–6 months, have an average litter size of 6–10 kits, and an expected lifespan of roughly 5–8 years under good care. Common recognized colors include White (albino with red eyes), Red and Black (and in some clubs Blue or Broken).

Detailed origin

Despite the name, the New Zealand breed was developed in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Breeders used red rabbits that had been associated with New Zealand imports together with other domestic strains to create a fast-growing, meat-type rabbit. The white (albino) strain was later selected and standardized, becoming widely used in laboratory settings. The precise mixture of foundation stock varies between accounts, but the breed’s formation is reliably placed in North American breeding programs focused on commercial traits.

Detailed description

Physically the New Zealand exhibits a broad, deep body and well-sprung ribs with firm muscling — traits selected for meat yield. The head is proportionate with straight profile and ears held upright of medium length (typically 11–12 cm, though ear length varies). The coat is short, dense and lies close to the body (flyback type), giving a smooth appearance. Performance-wise they have high growth rates: most strains reach slaughter/commercial weights of ~2.5–3.5 kg within 8–12 weeks and achieve dressing percentages commonly in the 50–60% range. Reproductively they are known for good fertility and mothering ability; average litter sizes are 6–10 kits but can vary with strain and management. Healthwise they are generally robust but, as a commonly farmed/lab breed, susceptible to the usual rabbit infectious and parasitic risks if biosecurity and husbandry are inadequate.
