Detailed origin

The breed originated in Altenburg, Thuringia, Germany, developed in the late 19th century to early 20th century from local tumbler and drum lineages. Breeders in the Altenburg area selected for a short, compact body, dense plumage, and prominent leg feathering to produce a showy pigeon. The breed spread to neighboring regions and beyond through pigeon clubs and exhibitions, and has been recognized in several national and international standards.

The bird has a robust, compact body and an upright posture. Head is small and rounded; beak short. Eyes bright. Wings are tightly folded along the body; tail moderate in length. Legs are heavily feathered (muffs) and visible plumage on the legs. Plumage comes in many colors and patterns, including blue, black, red, yellow, white and various markings. Temperament is generally calm and sociable; the breed requires regular care, including trimming of leg feathers and routine loft maintenance, as well as a balanced diet with adequate protein.
