Detailed origin
The Vogtland Drum originated in the Vogtland region of Germany during the 19th century. It was created by crossing local pigeon lines with other drum type varieties to enhance the drumming ability and the upright stance. The breed spread across central Europe in the early 20th century and was standardized by pigeon fanciers associations. Today it is recognized as a distinct breed in many national and international shows.
Detailed description
Physique is compact and sturdy. The chest is broad and the head is fairly rounded. Eyes bright, beak short to medium length. Legs with modest feathering. Plumage is varied including solid, pied and split patterns. Color range includes black, blue, white, red and yellow variants with checkering patterns. Wings are long and carried horizontally, tail full and rounded. Behavior is generally calm, sociable and manageable, not a strong flyer. The drum call is produced by wing beats and body movement, with a characteristic rhythmic sound that can last a few seconds in well matured individuals.
